Casa Lü
A residency for developing work within a living cultural context
Casa Lü is a 5–6 week artist residency in Mexico City that combines focused studio time with a structured program of dialogue and cultural engagement. Artists work within a small cohort, sharing space and ideas while engaging with the city’s contemporary art scene.
The program balances independence and structure, allowing artists to develop their work through reflection, experimentation, and exchange within a supportive environment.

What makes Casa Lü different
-
Located within one of the most active contemporary art scenes in Latin America
-
Combines structured feedback with direct engagement with the local art ecosystem
-
Small cohort format that supports sustained dialogue and close working relationships
-
Balance between independent studio time and guided interaction
-
Residency formats include a final exhibition, integrated as part of the development process
Two Residency Formats
Casa Lü offers two formats, each designed for a different stage and way of working.
Casa Lü Parque: Context & Exploration
A central, shared environment designed for artists whose work feeds on urban input, social energy, and constant exposure to new contexts. The shared house and communal layout create an active, socially engaged dynamic, with frequent informal exchange, shared routines, and ongoing dialogue among residents.
Parque tends to attract artists who are energized by proximity to others and to the city itself. The emphasis is on experimentation, risk-taking, and allowing ideas to evolve through conversation, context, and daily interaction. The group exhibition reflects this approach, focusing on process, exchange, and the development of new directions.
Casa Lü Sur: Focus & Advancement
A spacious, garden-based environment in Tlalpan, a historic borough within Mexico City with its own plazas, markets, and cultural life, connected to the rest of the city by metro and metrobus. Sur offers a quieter, more controlled working environment while remaining fully engaged with the city through curated visits, studio tours, and cultural programming.
The house provides larger studios, private rooms, and a more independent daily rhythm, making it well-suited for artists who prioritize space, continuity, and depth in their work.
Designed for artists with an established direction, Sur emphasizes sustained production and the advancement of an existing practice. The residency culminates in a solo exhibition, where each artist develops and presents a focused body of work within their studio space.
How the program works
Residents combine independent studio time with:
-
Weekly discussions and feedback sessions
-
Curated visits to galleries, artist studios, and cultural spaces
-
Ongoing exchange within a small, international cohort
The goal is not simply to produce work, but to develop a clearer understanding of the practice and its context.

Who it is for
Casa Lü is best suited for artists who are actively developing their practice and:
-
Have developed a body of work and want to push it further
-
Benefit from dialogue, feedback, and structured engagement
-
Are open to working within a small, committed cohort
-
Want to engage with a new cultural context as part of their process
It is less suited for artists seeking purely self-directed residencies or those primarily focused on institutional visibility.
Artist experience
Artists consistently highlight the balance between structure and independence, the strength of the community, and the direct engagement with Mexico City’s art scene.
“My experience… went far beyond my expectations. None of them can compare to this.”
“We were immediately immersed in the city’s art scene, and supported in every step.”
Why artists choose Casa Lü
Casa Lü tends to attract artists who are in an active stage of development, working with a defined practice but looking for a context that will challenge and refine it.
The residency functions less as a validation point and more as a development stage, helping artists gain clarity, direction, and a stronger sense of how their work operates within a broader artistic landscape.
